Yes, readers, it’s December … is the weather outside frightful yet? Or are we still waiting for that first winter storm, wondering whether we’ll have snow for the holidays?
Either way, the closing month of 2025 will be magical … it always is in the Fox Valley! We get to enjoy plenty of INDOOR sports, twinkling lights, parties with family and friends, and holiday shopping. Let’s put a bow on those last-minute gifts! See the 25 Gifts Under $25 special section starting on page 21. You’re sure to find something for all your sports-minded loved ones.
December is a month for celebrations, and we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX, which opened the wonderful world of high school and collegiate sports to female athletes across the country. See Nicole’s articles on page 8 and 18.
This issue also celebrates the 50th anniversary of women’s basketball at Lawrence University, as well as 50 years of girls basketball at Appleton West High School. Teammates Allysen Buss and Kayden Smit share the spotlight to tell us what it’s like to play for the small but mighty Terrors.
Staying indoors, we go One on One with Pastor David Wenzel, coach of the girls basketball team at Fox Valley Lutheran, and get answers to 20 Questions from Freedom High School wrestler Murphy Beyer. Swimmer Cash Braun, our student spotlight, discusses the importance of “treating every teammate as a friend.”
Greg drags us outdoors to meet Teri Jo Fendler, a Wautoma woman who took down a black bear on her very first bear-hunting trip. That feat is special enough … but wait until you read how BIG that bear was.
Looking ahead to 2026, Matt Ten Haken highlights sporting events coming to the Fox Valley over the next several months. You’ll be amazed at the number and variety … and glad that YOU aren’t responsible for keeping track of them all!
So grab some hot chocolate, curl up by the fire, and enjoy your Fox Cities Sports. And since December is a good month for giving, grab a few extra copies … they make great stocking stuffers!
